More compost bins rolling out in September

Mamre, Khayelitsha, Plumstead, Tokai and Eerste Rivier residents will be able to receive their compost bins in September at the upcoming sessions. Remember, only 250 bins will be available at each session.
The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate is continuing its efforts to encourage organic waste diversion away from landfill by rolling out additional compost bins in four areas during September.
The following communities will be able to collect their bins from 08:00 to 12:00 on the dates below:
• 6 September 2025: Mamre Civic Centre at Main Road, Mamre
• 11 September 2025: Khayelitsha CBD Hall at the corner of Walter Sisulu Road and Steve Biko Drive, Khayelitsha
• 13 September 2025: Tokai Library, Tokai Road, Tokai
• 20 September 2025: Cape Town Cricket Club at Victoria Road, Plumstead
• 27 September 2025: Eerste River MPC Hall at 1 Basil Road, Eerste River
Diversion of organic waste is beneficial to Cape Town, and the greater environment, because when left to decompose in landfill organic matter releases harmful gases that contribute to global warming.
‘By using organic waste to create compost instead, residents are able to grow healthy plants or vegetable gardens while assisting to preserve our planet.
‘Composting also assists to reduce greenhouse gases that are generated when food waste decomposes in the landfill, where there is no oxygen. This produces landfill gas, a greenhouse gas made primarily of methane, that is a potent contributor to human-induced climate change. We all need to work together to minimise the amount of organic waste that goes to landfill for the good of the planet,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.To qualify for a free composting container, applicants must:
1. Be the owner or tenant of a single residential property (excluding sectional title flats/apartments)
2. Have a secure garden or yard area for the compost bin
3. Bring a copy of their municipal account
4. Bring their South African ID book, ID card or passport
Interested and qualifying residents must apply in person at one of the scheduled collection events. Applications will not be accepted outside of these specified dates and times. If successful, applicants will receive their bins on the same day.

If your area is not on the list currently, please note the City is considering the next locations and will notify the communities once these are finalised.
